Etymology

1. c.1300, "throw down or fall with force," from a Scand. source (cf. Dan. dumpe, Norw. dumpa "to fall suddenly"). The sense of "unload en masse" is first recorded in Amer.Eng. 1784. The noun "place where refuse is dumped" is attested from 1865, originally of mining operations. Meaning "act of defecating" is from 1942. Dumpy "short and stout" is attested from 1750, but the connection is unclear.
2. From Middle English dumpen, dompen, probably from Old Norse dumpa (“to thump”) (whence Danish dumpe (“to fall suddenly”)), of uncertain origin, possibly imitative of falling, similar to thump. See: Danish 'dumpe'.
