Etymology

1. Inherited from Old Norse skotr (“Scot”). The Old Norse word has been compared with Old or Middle Irish scott (“Irishman”) and may be an early borrowing from it, though the connection is uncertain. The wider ethnonym is also represented by Late Latin Scotus (“Irishman, Gael”); its ultimate origin is unknown.
2. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk skotte, Danish skotte, Swedish skotte, Icelandic Skoti and Faroese skoti (“Scot”). See: Old Norse Nouns 'skotr', Old Norse Nouns 'skotr', Norwegian Nynorsk Nouns 'skotte', Danish Nouns 'skotte', Swedish Nouns 'skotte', Icelandic Nouns 'Skoti', Faroese Nouns 'skoti'.
