Etymology
1. jfr d.
tatovere, t.
tätowieren, fr.
tatouer, ävensom eng. tattoo; tidigast använt i Europa
1769 i formen
tattow av den brittiske upptäcktsresanden J.
Cook; av polynesiska tatau, tatu, tecken, målning References: 1
2. First part is a borrowing from a Polynesian language, e.g. Samoan tatau (“tattoo; to tap, to strike”), second part is native common suffix -era. First part is likely to have gone through another European language e.g. French, German or English before it ended up in Swedish, hence probably not a direct loan from Polynesian. Compare Danish tatovere, German tätowieren, French tatouer. See: Danish 'tatovere', German, old spelling 'tätowieren', French 'tatouer'.
Until the beginning of the 20th century, Swedish verbs had distinct forms for singular and plural. The forms below
