Declension of French Nouns

French is spoken by 75 million native speakers in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, French Guyana etc. It's also the official language in numerous former French colonies.

Every French noun has a grammatical gender, either masculine or feminine. As in English, nouns inflect for number. The plural is usually formed from the singular by adding the letter -s (cf. maison > maisons 'houses'). Nouns ending in -au, -eu, and -ou often take the ending -x instead (cf. jeu > jeux 'games').
