Etymology

1. O.E. gelpan (Anglian), gielpan (W.Saxon) "to boast," from P.Gmc. *gelpanan (cf. O.S. galpon, O.N. gjalpa "to yelp," O.N. gjalp "boasting," O.H.G. gelph "outcry"), from PIE base *ghel- "to cry out." The noun (O.E. gielp) originally meant "boasting;" meaning "quick, sharp bark or cry" is attested from c.1500.
2. From Middle English ȝelpen, yelpen, from Old English ġielpan (“to boast”), from Proto-West Germanic *gelpan, from Proto-Germanic *gelpaną (“to sound off, boast”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel‑ (“to call, shout, scream”).
3. Cognate with Saterland Frisian jalpe, galpe (“to bleep; cheep”), German Low German galpen (“to scream, shriek, howl”), Middle High German gelpfen, gelpfen (“to roar, howl, bark, boast, sing loudly”). See: Middle English 'ȝelpen', Frisian, Saterlandic 'jalpe', Middle High German 'gelpfen'.
