Etymology
1. 1598, "to deprive of the attributes of a human being," from un- (2) + verbal derivative of man (n.). Meaning "to deprive of manly courage" is attested from c.1600; that of "to emasculate" is from 1684.
Unmanly "degrading to a human" is attested from c.1475 (cf. M.Du.
onmamlijc, Ger.
unmännlich).
Unmanned "not furnished with a crew" is from 1544.
2. From un- (“de-, dis-, away”) + man (“male person”). Compare Dutch ontmannen, German entmannen, both “to unman, emasculate, castrate”. See: Dutch '
ontmannen', German, old spelling '
entmannen'.
