Etymology

1. 1531, "sell alcoholic liquor by retail," of unknown origin, possibly from a Scand. source (e.g. Norw. dial. tipla "to drink slowly or in small quantities"). Meaning "drink (alcoholic beverage) too much" is first attested 1560. Tippler "seller of alcoholic liquors" is from 1396; in the sense of "habitual drinker" it dates from 1580.
2. Unknown but possibly from a Scandinavian source (see Norwegian tipla), or from tip + -le.
