Phrasal Verbs
Etymology
1. "to make a gentle ringing sound," 1382, possibly a frequentative form of
tinken "to ring, jingle," perhaps of imitative origin. Meaning "to urinate" is recorded from 1960, from childish talk.
2. From Middle English tinclen, equivalent to tink + -le (frequentative suffix). Cognate with West Frisian tinkelje (“to tinkle”), Dutch tinkelen (“to tinkle”), German Low German tinkeln (“to flicker, glitter, sparkle”). See: Dutch '
tinkelen'.
