Additional Information

Cf. Old English weak verb scrēadian (shred) and sprǣdan (spread).

Etymology

1. c.1200, "to stretch out, to send in various directions," probably from O.E. -sprædan (especially in tosprædan "to spread out," and gesprædung "spreading"), from P.Gmc. *spraidijanan (cf. Dan. sprede, O.Swed. spreda, M.Du. spreiden, O.H.G., Ger. spreiten "to spread"), probably from PIE *sper- "to strew" (see sprout). Reflexive sense of "to extend, expand" is attested from 1340.
2. From Middle English spreden, from Old English sprǣdan (“to spread, expand”), from Proto-Germanic *spraidijaną (“to spread”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)per- (“to strew, sow, sprinkle”).
3. Cognate with Saterland Frisian spreede (“to spread”), West Frisian spriede (“to spread”), North Frisian spriedjen (“to spread”), Dutch spreiden (“to spread”), Low German spreden (“to spread”), German spreiten (“to spread, spread out”), Danish sprede (“to spread”), Norwegian spre, spreie (“to spread, disseminate”), Swedish sprida (“to spread”), Latin spernō, spargō, Ancient Greek σπείρω (speírō), Persian سپردن (sepordan, “to deposit”). Doublet of spurn. See: Proto-Germanic '*spraidijaną', Frisian, Saterlandic 'spreede', Dutch 'spreiden', Low Saxon 'spreden', German, old spelling 'spreiten', Danish 'sprede', Swedish 'sprida', Latin 'spernō'.
