Etymology
From Middle English scratten. Further etymology uncertain; apparently related to Swedish kratta (“to rake”) and therefore possibly borrowed from North Germanic. Also compare German kratzen (“to scratch”). Ultimately onomatopoeic in origin. See: Swedish '
kratta', German, old spelling '
kratzen'.
