Etymology
1. 1623, "fit of ill humor," perhaps imitative of an exclamation of disgust (cf. Ger. muffen "to sulk"). The verb is from 1797. Miffy (adj.) "liable to 'take a miff' " is from 1810; miffed is 1824 (Sir Walter Scott calls it "a women's phrase").
2. Compare German muffeln (“grouse, grumble”) and similar German words with similar meanings such as Muff, mupf, Muffel and Dutch moppen (“growl, grouse”). Probably related to mop (“grimace”).
