Etymology
1. 1638, "to render (something) whole," from L.

integrare "make whole," from
integer "whole" (see integer). Meaning "to put together parts or elements and combine them into a whole" is from 1802.
Integration in social/racial relations, 1940, originally in South Africa. Back-formation
integrate (in this sense) dates from 1948, in ref. to U.S. presidential contest of that year.
Desegregate in this sense first recorded 1940.
2. First attested in the 1450's as an adjective, first attested in 1638 as a verb; from Middle English integrat(e) (“intact, whole”), borrowed from Latin integrātus, perfect passive participle of integrō (“to make whole, renew, repair, begin again”) (see -ate (verb-forming suffix) and -ate (adjective-forming suffix)), from integer (“whole, fresh”) + -ō (verb-forming suffix). See integer and integral.
