Additional Information

Etymology

1. O.E. hydan, from W.Gmc. *khuthjanan, from PIE *keudh- (cf. Gk. keuthein "to hide, conceal"), from base *(s)keu- "to cover, conceal" (see hide (n.1)). Past participle hidden is a M.E. formation (O.E. had gehydd "hidden") on the model of ride/ridden, etc. Hide and seek (1672) replaced earlier all hid (1588); while hide-out "a hiding place" is Amer.Eng., first attested 1885.
2. From Middle English hiden, huden, from Old English hȳdan (“to hide, conceal, preserve”), from Proto-West Germanic *huʀdijan (“to conceal”), from Proto-Germanic *huzdijaną (“to hoard”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewdʰ- (“to cover, wrap, encase”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewH- (“to cover”).
3. The verb was originally weak. In the King James Version of the Bible (1611), both hid and hidden are used for the past participle.
4. Cognates
5. Cognate with Dutch huiden, Low German (ver)hüden, (ver)hüen (“to hide, cover, conceal”), Welsh cuddio (“to hide”), Latin custōs, Ancient Greek κεύθω (keúthō, “to conceal”), Sanskrit कुहरम् (kuharam, “cave”). Related to hut and sky. See: Middle English 'hiden', Proto-Germanic '*huzdijaną', Dutch 'huiden', Low Saxon '(ver)hüden', Welsh 'cuddio'.
