Etymology
1. 1588, possibly a dial. survival from O.N.
gustr "a cold blast of wind," or O.H.G.
gussa "flood," both from P.Gmc.
*gustiz, from PIE
*gheus-, from root
*gheu- "to pour." Probably originally in Eng. as a nautical term.
2. Apparently from an unrecorded Middle English *gust, from Old Norse gustr (“a gust, blast”), from Proto-Germanic *gustiz, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰew-. Cognate with Icelandic gustur (“gust of wind”). Related also to Old Norse gusa (“to gush forth”), Old High German gussa (“flood”), Middle English guschen (> English gush).
3. The English word was not recorded before Shakespeare. See: English '
gush'.
