Etymology

1. 1589, from Du. belegeren "to besiege," from be- "around" + legeren "to camp." A 16c. word from the Flemish Wars. Spelling infl. by league.
2. Borrowed from Dutch belegeren and/or Middle Low German belēgeren; equivalent to be- + lair. Compare also German belagern, Danish belejre. The English spelling was perhaps influenced by unrelated league. See: Dutch 'belegeren', German, old spelling 'belagern', Danish 'belejre'.
