Etymology

1. 1703, originally a slang or cant word, perhaps Scottish from bombaze "perplex," related to bombast, or Fr. embabuiner "to make a fool (lit. 'baboon') of."
2. Derivative of 17th-century vernacular bam (“to trick, to con”), which is a derivative of bam in noun use (fraudster, cheat). Possibly from French embobiner. See: French 'embobiner'.
