Etymology

1. Most likely from fara + -ang. The suffix -ang is a rare, unproductive suffix found in some other terms like berang (“gait”) and årang (“cohort”). Probably related to Icelandic farangur (“luggage”)
2. First attested in 1758 by Søren Fermann in Tinnmål dialect. Later also attested by Søren Richart Hagerup (probably in Surnadal dialect, ca. 1770) and Jacob Nicolai Wilse (Spydeberg dialect, 1780). Wilse gives definition "a sudden sickness" (probably same as bråmein). See: Icelandic Nouns 'farangur'.
