Etymology

Borrowed from Occitan gavach (“rustic; mountain-dweller, northerner, peasant”), which originally meant "bird's crop, goitre" and changed to a derogatory word due to the perceived higher incidence of diseases up north; compare Catalan gavatx. It is also cognate with French gabot, jabot, Servigliano caaciu, Neapolitan gavattse, Piedmontese gavagun and Catalan gavaig, all meaning "bird's crop" and French gavion (“throat”) and Picard gave (“stomach”) from a Vulgar Latin form *gauakte, of pre-Roman substrate origin, possibly of Celtic origin. See: Catalan Nouns 'gavatx', Catalan Nouns 'gavaig', French Nouns 'gavion'.
