Etymology

Traditionally derived from Proto-Indo-European *ḱs-eh₁-ye-ti, from *ḱes- (“to cut”), though this etymology leaves the a-vocalism unexplained. De Vaan further criticizes this etymology on semantic grounds, arguing that the connection between the sense "to cut" and "to lack" is not clear. Schrijver suggests that a mechanical reconstruction as *kHs-eh₁- would be admissible, which—though lacking cognates—is perhaps likely to have been inherited as—according to Schrijver—verbs, at least those without a technical meaning, are generally unlikely to be borrowed. The term has also been linked with Proto-Indo-Iranian *káHmas (“desire”) and Sanskrit शास् (śās, “to instruct”), though De Vaan is skeptical of these theories and ultimately leaves the origin open.
