Etymology
1. According to Orel, from Proto-Indo-European *skéydt (“to cut off”), from *skeyd- (“to split, to divide”) (though Kroonen is implicitly skeptical). Cognates include Lithuanian šikti (“to defecate, shit”), Proto-Slavic *cěditi (“to strain, filter”), Ancient Greek σχῐ́ζω (skhĭ́zō, “to split”).
2. Compare typologically Proto-Germanic *turdą ( Proto-Indo-European *der- (“to split, to separate; to tear”)). See: Proto-Indo-European '
*skéydt', Lithuanian '
