Etymology
Probably borrowed from Proto-Germanic *wunskijaną, or if the noun *usko is primary, from Proto-Germanic *wunskaz, *wunskō. From the same source as Proto-Samic *oskōtēk. Alternatively related to Proto-Permic *ɛskini and Eastern Khanty [Term?], both from Proto-Finno-Ugric *iskä-, but the initial vowel is problematic. Compare also Erzya озкс (ozks, “sacrifice; prayer”), which may derive from the same root *iskä-. See: Proto-Germanic '
*wunskijaną'.
