Etymology

1. From Old Galician-Portuguese aro of uncertain origin, probably from Latin arvum (“field”) with the initial meaning of outskirts and later rim, since those where usually circular in shape. First attested in c. 13th century..
2. However, this does not explain how the unusual semantic development fully happened; Coromines thinks the meaning for ring could be of substrate origin, possibly borrowed from a Vasconic language, possibly cognate with Basque ao (“mouth”), or through a Celtic language, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₂er- (“to join”), cognate with Sanskrit अर (ara, “spoke (of a wheel)”) and Latin arma, possibly also being the source for Galician arna and Asturian arna.
3. Cognate with Spanish aro and Galician aro. See: Old Portuguese Nouns 'aro', Latin Nouns 'arvum', Latin Nouns 'arma', Galician Nouns 'arna', Asturian Nouns 'arna', Spanish Nouns 'aro', Galician Nouns 'aro'.
