Etymology

1. Uncertain. Perhaps an alteration of hafettan, from Proto-West Germanic *habattjan, from Proto-West Germanic *hab, *habu (“lift, lifting”) + *-attjan; or derived from the related noun *hafet, from Proto-West Germanic *habati, from Proto-Germanic *habatją (“a lifting, an elevating”), equivalent to *hafet + -ian.
2. Alternatively, an alteration of āfētian (“to stomp with the feet, applaud, praise”). Possibly a merger of both theories.
