Translations

  • order, to issue a command
  • Etymology

    1. Borrowed from Middle Low German bevalen (“to command, entrust”), equivalent to be- (“be-”) + vēlen (“to hide, conceal, entrust”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *felhaną (“to hide, conceal; entrust”).
    2. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk befale, befala, Danish befale, Swedish befalla, and German befehlen. See: Proto-Germanic '*felhaną', Norwegian, nynorsk 'befale', Danish 'befale', Swedish 'befalla', German, old spelling 'befehlen'.
