Etymology
From Danish øl, from Old Norse ǫl, from Proto-Germanic *alu, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂elut- (“beer”). The short-vowel pronunciation was originally chiefly restricted to Oslo, for which reason the form øl, ølet was standardized instead of øll, øllet (cf. Danish øl, øllet). However, this pronunciation has now established itself more widely, making the current spelling irregular. See: Danish Nouns '
øl', Old Norse Nouns '
ǫl'.
