Etymology
From Old Irish dess (“right-hand; south; right”) (compare Scottish Gaelic deas, Manx jiass) from Proto-Celtic *dexswos (compare Cornish dyghow, Welsh deau), from Proto-Indo-European *deḱswós, from *deḱs- (“right-hand side”). Cognate with Gothic 𐍄𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍃𐍅𐌰 (taihswa) and Ancient Greek δεξιός (dexiós). See: Gothic Adjectives '
𐍄𐌰𐌹𐌷𐍃𐍅𐌰'.
