Etymology

1. Probably from bídaro, from Paleo-Hispanic, ultimately from Proto-Celtic *betu- (“birch”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷet- (“resin, pitch”). The tonic i can be due to the influence of Germanic forms (cf. English birch) during the early Middle Ages.
2. Cognate with French bouleau. Compare also the Galician Celtism berro < *berŭro-, French berle < *berŭla. Synonymous with bido, bedulo, and bidueiro. See: English Nouns 'birch', French Nouns 'bouleau'.
