Etymology
1. Inherited from Middle French bignet, from Old French bignet (“fried dough enveloping a food substance”), a diminutive of bigne, bugne, buyne (“lump, swelling”), from Frankish *bungjō (“lump, bump, swelling”), from Proto-Germanic *bungô, *bunkô (“lump, heap, crowd”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰenǵʰ- (“thick, dense, fat”). Alternatively, from Gaulish *bunia.
2. Cognate with Old High German bungo (“swelling, tuber”) (German Bunge), Dutch bonk (“lump, clump”), Scottish Gaelic bonnach (“cake, biscuit”). Also related to English bun, bunk, bunch, bunion.
3. Equivalent to beigne + -et. See: Dutch Nouns '
bonk'.
