Etymology

1. "to come up to, to catch in pursuit," c.1225 (implied in pp. ouer-token), from over + take (q.v.).
2. From Middle English overtaken, likely a replacement alteration (as the Middle English verb taken replaced nimen (“to take”)), of Middle English overnimen (“to overtake”), from Old English oferniman (“to take by surprise, overtake”), equivalent to over- + take. See: Old English 'oferniman'.
