Etymology
1. c.1250, "shine brightly," perhaps from M.Du., M.L.G.
glaren "to gleam," related by rhoticization to
glas (see glass). Sense of "stare fiercely" is from 1609. O.E.
glær meant "amber."
Glaring "obtrusively conspicuous" is from 1706.
2. From Middle English glaren, from Old English *glærian, from Proto-West Germanic *glarōn. Cognate with dialectal Middle Dutch glariën (“to glisten; sparkle”), Low German glaren (“to shine brightly; glow; burn”), Middle High German glaren (“to shine brightly”). Related to glower, glass. See: Low Saxon 'glaren', Middle High German '
glaren'.
