Etymology

1. c.1425, Scottish, from L. dissentire "differ in sentiments," from dis- "differently" + sentire "to feel, think." Dissenter in the religious sense is from 1639; with a capital D- from 1679.
"Has there ever been a society which has died of dissent? Several have died of conformity in our lifetime." [Jacob Bronowski]

2. From Middle English dissenten, from Latin dissentiō, dissentīre (“to differ in sentiments, disagree, be at odds, contradict, quarrel”), from dis- + sentiō, sentīre (see sense). See: Latin 'dissentiō'.
