Etymology
1. 1474, "behavior, bearing," from M.Fr.
deporter "behave," from
de- "thoroughly, formally" +
porter "to carry, bear oneself;" original sense preserved in
deportment (1601). Meaning "banish" is first recorded 1641, from Fr.
déporter, from L.
deportare "carry off, transport, banish;" associated by folk etymology with
portus "harbor."
Deportee first attested 1895.
2. Borrowed from French déporter. With the meaning of "behave", from Old French deporter (“behave”), from Latin deportō, from de- + portō. See: French '
déporter'.
