Etymology
1. 1533, from L.
conferre "to bring together, compare," from
com- "together" +
ferre "to bear" (see infer). Sense of "taking counsel" led to
conference (1555). The meaning "compare" (common 1530-1650) is largely obsolete, but the abbreviation
cf. is still used in this sense.
2. From Early Modern English conferre, from Middle French conférer, from Old French conferer, from Latin cōnferō. Compare Dutch confereren, German konferieren, Danish konferere, Swedish konferera. Doublet of collate. See also infer, relate and refer, delate and defer, as well as prelate and prefer among others. See: Dutch '
confereren', German, old spelling '
konferieren', Danish '
konferere', Swedish '
konferera'.
