Etymology
1. "short, jerking motion," 1386, probably connected to M.E.
bobben "to strike, beat" (c.1280), perhaps of echoic origin. Another early sense was "to make a fool of, cheat" (c.1320). As a slang word for "shilling" it is attested from 1789, but the signification is unknown.
2. From Middle English bobben (“to strike, beat, shake, jog”), of uncertain origin. Compare Scots bob (“to mark, dance with a bobbing motion”), Icelandic boppa (“to wave up and down”), Swedish bobba (“to bob”), Dutch dobberen ("bobbing"). See: Scots '
bob', Icelandic '
boppa', Swedish '
bobba'.

-
[...] displayed outside a shop-window, it would make the fortune of any retail business in Holborn. When he had shown himself and talked a little while, he withdrew with his pocket-instrument, and went bobbing down the cabin, among men of six feet high and upwards, like a light-house walking among lamp-posts.
