Etymology
1. 1580, from v.
bibben "to drink" (c.1380), from L.
bibere (see imbibe), but impossible to say whether this is because it was worn while drinking or because it "soaked up" spills.
2. Originally verb sense “drink heartily”, from Middle English bibben, either from Latin bibō (“to drink”) or of imitative origin. Noun sense (clothing) presumably either because worn while drinking, or because the clothing itself “drinks up” spills. See: Latin '
bibō'.
