Etymology
1. 1592, from M.Fr.
barricader "to barricade" (1558), from
barrique, "barrel," itself from Sp.
barrica "barrel," perhaps from
barra "bar." Extended to "improvised rampart" in 1588 Huguenot riots in Paris, when large barrels filled with earth and stones were set up in the streets. The noun is attested from 1642, earlier
barricado (1590).
2. The noun is borrowed from French barricade, or an assimilation of the earlier barricado to the French form. The verb is from the noun or French barricader. See: French '
barricader'.
