Etymology
From Old Danish drøm, from Old Norse draumr, from Proto-Germanic *draumaz (“dream”), cognate with English dream, German Traum. The Germanic noun is derived from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrewgʰ- (“to deceive, injure”), hence Sanskrit द्रुह्यति (druhyati, “to hurt”) and also, via Low German, Danish bedrage (“to deceive”). See: Old Norse Nouns '
draumr', English Nouns '
dream', German Nouns '
Traum'.
