Etymology
Coined by Jan Svatopluk Presl based on Russian во́рвань (vórvanʹ, “whale fat”), from Middle Russian ворвонь (vorvonʹ, “fats, hids or skins of marine mammals”), from Old East Slavic вървонъ (vŭrvonŭ, “huntable marine mammal”), which is conventionally believed to derive from Old East Norse narhval. First attested in the 19th century.
