Etymology
Attested since the 13th century, with the origin being in the regions of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Due to this, a Mozarabic origin has been proposed. Alternatively, borrowed from Occitan gavach. If of Mozarabic origin, it would come from a Vulgar Latin base *gauaktio-, if borrowed from Occitan, *gauakte-. Ultimately of pre-Roman substrate origin, possibly of Celtic origin. Cognate with Spanish gabacho, French gabot, jabot, Servigliano caaciu, Neapolitan gavattse, Piedmontese gavagun, French gavion (“throat”) and Picard gave (“stomach”). See: Spanish Nouns '
gabacho', French Nouns '
gavion'.
