Etymology
1. Uncertain. Various theories exist:
2. * According to Constantino Cabal, it's derived from Latin guerrire (“to jump for joy”).
3. * According to Fausto Vigil, it's derived from Basque Oguerria (“Christmas”).
4. * According to Corominas, it may come from Gothic 𐌸𐍅𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌷𐍃 (þwairhs, “enraged”), perhaps through Italian guercio (“cross-eyed”), through a Proto-Romance Vulgar Latin *duerkju or *guerku.
5. * According to Julio Concepción it may derive Proto-West Germanic *werʀu (whence guerra). Though he also declares that there is no plausible theory. See: Latin Nouns '
guerrire', Italian Nouns '
guercio'.
