Etymology
1. Pseudo-Latinism, as if from the nonexistent noun *ascendentia. Formed from ascender + -encia. While ascendentia is a real word in Latin, it is only a form of the participle ascendēns. Note that Latin does not use ascendentem, the accusative singular of this participle, to refer to an ancestor; words for ancestor include progenitor (literally “progenitor”) and avus (literally “grandfather”).
2. Cognate with Catalan ascendència, French ascendance, Italian ascendenza, Portuguese ascendência, and Romanian ascendență. See: Catalan Nouns '
