Translations

Etymology

1. From Proto-Albanian *lauga, from Proto-Indo-European *lowg- (compare Old Norse laug (“hot spring, bath”), Latvian luga (“marshy deposit, silt”), Serbo-Croatian lȕža (“puddle, pool”)).
2. Meyer suggests a borrowing from South Slavic vlaga "moisture" (see Serbo-Croatian vlaga). However, since the initial sound group vl- is retained in Slavic loanwords such as vlagë, this hypothesis must be rejected for phonetic reasons alone.
3. Alternatively, and the most probable etymology, from Proto-Albanian *lag-, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *(u̯)lag-, from Proto-Indo-European *u̯l̥Hg-é/ó- (“to become moist”). Although no parallels are known for the development of PPA *u̯l- > PA *l- > Alb. *l-, the assumption of this sound change is plausible due to the development of PPA *u̯r- > PA *r- > Alb. *rr-. A more promising connection to lag is the word family of Lithuanian vi̇̀lgti (“to moisten”) and Latvian vîlgt (“to become moist”).
